Volunteers
Without our awesome volunteers, we couldn't run great swim meets or throw fun social events! Thank you all for being so generous with your time and supportive of our kids. This year most of our volunteer sign-ups will be done through Swimtopia.
Under the "Meets and Events" tab, you'll find a list of all the activities on our calendar this season. As you scroll down, you'll see that some of the events will have a green job sign-up open icon. Click on the icon and you'll see a list of all the jobs or items that are still needed.
PARENT INVOLVEMENT
Swimming is unique among high school sports in that large numbers of parent volunteers are needed. Some of these require no formal training (timers, runners) and some require both training and certification (stroke and turn, referee, starter). Parents who have referee, starter or stroke & turn training and experience in USA Swimming or SAIL are especially needed. Each year in August the South Carolina High School League runs training and certification courses throughout the state; parents who wish to referee, start or stroke & turn in High School meets must be certified through one of these High School League courses.
Volunteer positions will be assigned based on desires, availability and qualifications of the parents. A master calendar will be used at the Parent/ Coach Meeting at the beginning of the season in order fill the positions for all of the meets. Please find a suitable replacement if you are unable to fulfill your spot.
Volunteer Positions & Duties
Social Events - Host team events - facilitate or help with meal donations.
Computer Coordinator/Computer Operator - Manage team information and Learn Meet Manager and Swimtopia computer programs, manage database, set-up meets, coordinate entries and results, print heat sheets and lane timer sheets, send results to SCHSL and other teams.
Officials - Stroke & Turn, Starter, Referee - Previous experience required; SCHSL certification required for Championship Meets. See Chris Penny for more information on how to become an official. [email protected] or [email protected] or 864-354-3058
Team Photographer - Photograph swimmers at meets
Concessions - Home meets - sell concessions and help set up and tear down concession stand. Amy Penny coordinates concession items. Donations are appreciated.
Deck Marshall - Maintains order and ensures safety during warm-ups and throughout the swim meet. Marshals are the primary enforcers of safety rules in the pool, the pool deck, and the restrooms. Has full authority to warn or order to cease and desist with the concurrence of the referee. Can have people removed from the swimming venue if they are behaving in an unsafe manner or using profane language, or whose actions are disrupting the orderly conduct of the meet.
Lane Timer - Timers start their watches on the strobe light from the Colorado System and stop their watches when the swimmer in their lane touches the wall with any part of their body. There are three Timers per lane and all three times are recorded by the recording timer. The Runner picks up lane timer sheets for delivery to the computer operator. This job gives you the best view of the pool and the swimmers during their races.
Head Timer (Lane timer experience required) - Supervise lane timers. Start two backup watches for each race.
Runner - Runners collect lane timer sheets throughout the meet and deliver them to the Computer Operator and post results.
